A tripod is one of the items that is high on every macro photographers’ wish list. A good tripod can help you achieve sharper photos by reducing camera shake. Unfortunately, not everyone owns a tripod and even if you do own a tripod, sometimes you do not want to to carry it with you on your photography expeditions.

So this DIY string tripod video will show you how you can make your very own string tripod (or image stabilizer) for your camera with just a few dollars. In situations where you do not have access to an actual tripod, a string tripod is a good alternative. It is important to note that there are advantages and disadvantages to using a string tripod –

Advantages of a string tripod

  • Inexpensive to make
  • Can be made quite quickly
  • Easy to store and portable – fits into your pocket
  • Much lighter than a real tripod
  • Can be used in areas where tripods are banned such as museums

Disadvantages of a string tripod

  • It is not as steady as an actual tripod
  • Predominantly reduces vertical camera shake movement only
  • May get tangled or break/snap

What you need to make a string tripod

  • Bolt 1 1/4″ diameter
  • Nylon string (one that doesn’t stretch) – Length of the string should be approximately your height
  • Washer
