What does your Camera’s Aperture Look Like?

In photography, we often talk about changing the camera’s Aperture setting in order to control the depth of field within your photos. But… have you ever stopped to wonder about your camera’s aperture? Have you ever asked the question “What is the aperture made out of?” or “What does the aperture actually look like inside the camera’s lens?”. Well, todays post will hopefully help to answer some of the questions that you may have.

We came across the image below and decided to share it with you as we believe it provides a good summary of the ‘Aperture’ in our cameras. It provides you with a tour of your lens, and highlights the following parts –

  1. Iris blades – The aperture is created by a set of intersecting blades that forms a diaphragm.
  2. Lens component – The aperture assembly is located between the lens element in the barrel of your lens.
  3. Motor – The aperture is controlled by a motor which opens and shuts the aperture when the shutter fires.
